Me & Religion🌻

In Nigeria, religion is mainly categorised into three; Christianity, Islam and traditional worshippers.

However, on forms and applications it’s just two categories, Christianity or Islam. Hence, traditional worshippers have to pick their second best religion to fit in.

Personally, religion(christainity) is a unique journey that I am very much discovering and learning. I understand the importance of faith and believe in the concept of God, but I am not ashamed to say it’s still a big struggle for me.

Generally, I look simple outwardly, except if there is an occasion for me to look peng! I usually go about a regular day with no make-up, just eight to ten cornrows on my head, no artificial nails, just a basic look that has more to do with me being very carefree about my looks.

But most times, I get mistaken for a tongue-speaking, demon chasing, fire breathing sister of the most high. And I am super tired of telling people “I am not religious, I just love a simple look, and my look is not exclusive to believers” but the reactions that follow are usually insane.

So below are top ten reactions I get when I tell people I am not religious.

1. The ones that laugh it off as a joke

Iffahear😂😂

2. The ones that start to argue with me.

How can you say you are not religious? 😡

3. The ones that assume I possess supernatural powers.

Mama di mama, I hail your government o.

4. The ones that are just in shock.

5. The ones that assume I fly in the night.

6. The ones that are disappointed I can’t heal the sick with my deeper life looks.

I am disappointed you are not who I wanted you to be.

7. The ones that are interested in whatever I am practising.

So how does it work? I am ready to sell my soul.🤑

8. The ones that try to play it cool.

My cousin’s brother’s last born’s first born was also not religious. It’s not a big deal.

9. The ones that just walk away from the conversation they started.

I can’t believe this.

10. Then the guardians of the galaxy.

How are your parents even cool with this?

I have actually learnt to deal with the general disapproval of not being religious and stuff. It is still quite awkward for me tho.

I would like to hear your opinions in the comment section. Have you met someone that told you they weren’t religious? How did you react?

P.S: My answers to the following frequent questions I am usually asked.

Do you believe there is a God? Yes.

Do you believe he interferes with the physical world? Yes/ maybe/ I am not sure.

Do you know what role you play in all of this? Not really.

Why are you alive? Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t think I even know why I was born, but I think I have a purpose to fulfil perhaps, and I think I know what it is but I am not sure because you can’t be sure of anything.

Enjoy your Sunday🌻

  1. As your brother in Christ, I’ve gotta tell you, it’s completely okay to be confused and have questions. What’s important is a desire to answer them.
God is faithful to reveal and I find my faith was fortified with answered questions in prayer, reading & life.

In America, “not religious” people are common, and the culture can sometimes reflect that spiritual apathy.

    Bless you sis !

  2. What an awesome post! I love the beauty of your thought wrapped in gentle humor. Yes. You do have a purpose and you are walking in that purpose right now! Look at what God says about you:
Psalms 139:13-18 “For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.
My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is their sum!
If I would count them, they are more in number than the sand. When I wake up, I am still with you.”
Press on dear heart, your heavenly Father is well pleased!

  3. It seems to me that if you wish to meet people who are not religious to discuss religious beliefs (or lack thereof) you will have to literally broaden your horizons since everyone where you live appear to be religious.
I’m from Sweden myself and if I want to do the same, I’ll stand outside, wait 5 seconds or so and then speak to the first, or maybe second, person I meet, and there he/she is!
If religion doesn’t fill the void in you, maybe you’re trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Find another peg, not another religion.

  5. This actually caught my attention, I myself struggle between becoming Buddhist. I don’t believe in “God” per say and this too is new to me. I grew up with my whole family being Muslim. I even went to catholic school (I know crazy) but for some reason religion for me has always been a struggle. Now, writing it out maybe because my family was Muslim and I went to catholic school lol. I’m more of a believer of what you put out in the universe comes back to you. Hmm..who’s to say I’m wrong, guess one day I shall find out.

  8. Your posts are usually a mix of humour and seriousness, I like it. I can relate to reactions 1, 4 & 8. Denial then shock and acceptance. From your post, you seem weird but likeable.
    Happy Sunday to you too.
