The Class (Addressing an adolescent class on blogging & the Internet)

All you need is wifi & a dream.

Day 09:

Hi, call me Ria.

Just like you, I was fascinated by the internet as a teenager. Although, I never took much interest in blogging at the time. Well, maybe it was because we didn’t have as many blogs back then as we have now.

The internet has really done a good job connecting the whole of humanity like neurons in a giant brain and has brought about the rave of online journals, what we refer to as blogs.

A blog is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. The term blog is a shortened form of weblog. Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or adding an article to an existing blog is called “blogging”.

Everyone is blogging like there is no tomorrow and it’s such a good thing to be a part of this trend. A venture where you can have fun while making money if you do it right.

With the internet, you can learn life skills and become a professional. From baking to programming to public speaking to learning a new language, everything you ever had a passion for can be learned and mastered on the internet. It doesn’t end there, you can also connect to the professional community where you can get to be mentored by experts in all walks of life from all over the world.

All the useful information gotten from learning online can also be used to create awesome contents on your blog which would also help novices who were once like you.

Blogging is all about sharing and learning which is what life is about anyway. It also has awesome benefits aside from being a stream of income.

1. It improves your writing skills and vocabulary.

2. It’s an avenue to make a difference through advocacy.

3. It is a wonderful medium to express yourself unapologetically.

4. Your readers can become customers if you have a product/service you render.

5. It can improve your research skills.

However, getting information from the internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant. The water gushes out at high pressure with no filter whatsoever, and you are bound to get yourself drenched in the process.

It’s important to practice safe internet usage. One wrong click and you are drowning in the abyss and it becomes difficult to get out.

The internet is like an amusement fun park, it’s so colorful and thrilling, its almost as if the fun never ends. This makes it super easy to get hooked on it, there is always a message popping, a new fun article to read, games to download, movies to watch, chatrooms to explore, friend requests to accept, breaking news and gossip to comment on, the list is endless.

Internet blogging could be a giant distraction. Therefore, it is important you prioritize and allocate time for school work and other personal engagements.

Also, generating traffic to your blog is not a do or die affair, don’t resort to deception or infringement of other people’s privacy to gain popularity or acceptance (views, likes or comments).

It’s okay if your blog is not as popular as your peers. Work on generating good content and in good time, you will get a steady stream of readers.

Finally, be careful with the kind of content you share. The internet has no eraser.

Thank You.

Do you have any questions?

“The first thing you need to decide when you build your blog is what you want to accomplish with it, and what it can do if successful.”
