23 Hard Truths About Life From a 23-Year-old.

I will be clocking the big 23 in two months time and as each day goes by, I can’t help but reflect on a lot of things.

Life has taught me many things and I am indeed grateful for all the many lessons. I totally love and cherish the woman I have become and I have also learned to embrace all of the experiences that shaped me. You can’t love the finished product and hate the process, they are both interwoven and mutually dependent on each other.

Anyways, I decided to post this earlier than planned. It’s okay if you disagree with me at any point. I always welcome different perspectives and opinions on my blog.

1. No one cares.

This may sound like a cliché but it’s one of the oldest truths. No one wants to know how difficult your life is, everyone has their own problems too. So stop complaining and start looking for solutions.

2. The secret of good success is in your daily routine.

We often think that success just knocks on our door because we ordered it from amazon or falls on our laps from the high heavens because we prayed. Well, it doesn’t work that way. Achieving good success is a sum of our habits and daily routines leading up to the point you eventually get recognized for that project you have been working on.

3. Bad people do win.

I know it may sound disappointing but it’s the truth, bad people win at life. Winning is not a prize they hand out to people for good conduct.

4. Keep a small circle at your own peril.

You may say it’s the quality that matters, quite alright but you can never underestimate the power of having a large network of people.

People realize this quite late in life.

5. You will always be judged.

Regardless of what you do or how you act or the decisions you make, so it’s important you live your life unapologetically.

6. Everyone has done stupid things at one point in time.

Don’t let anyone make you feel you are a dunce for not doing things right the first time or even the second time.

7. You don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate.

Life doesn’t give you things on a platter of gold because you asked nicely or because you feel you deserve it. If you want nice things on a platter of gold you have to put in real work.

8. People rate you based on the value you place on yourself.

If you don’t place any value on yourself, people will hang a price tag on you and trust me, you won’t like the price you see.

9. Only a fool trades peace for wealth.

Peace of mind should not be traded for anything at all. Anything that cost you your peace is too expensive.

10. Life goes on.

Nobody is indispensable. If you deprive yourself of rest, spending quality time with loved ones and good care because you are the best at your job and you need to meet up with impossible targets, the moment you drop dead, your company will replace you in a heartbeat.

Everyone will eventually forget about you and move on. Your spouse may remarry in a few years, your children will then have a new parent, you will be replaced at work the very next day. The world won’t stop because you died.

11. Great wealth and a dead conscience go hand in hand.

Anyone who really pays their workers what they are worth and abides by all the rules to the letter will not amass great wealth.

People build up wealth by riding on the backs of other people’s sufferings, cutting corners and turning a blind eye to many injustices. And, all these you have to do effectively with a dead conscience.

12. People are selfish (and so are you).

People are always out to manipulate and use you for their own personal gain.

13. Physical beauty is a great advantage.

Even though, many people scream about brains being a great advantage, having physical beauty is also an equally great advantage.

Physical appearance matters a great deal. A beautiful dumb stranded woman is 100% likely to get all the help she needs on a highway than a smart ugly woman.

14. Money corrupts even the best of people.

Money is a necessary evil. It has the ability to decay even the best of hearts. Everyone needs to tread carefully in the chase for money.

15. Your words are more important than your thoughts.

I know they say it is the thought that counts but the truth is, no one can read your thoughts. It is what spills from your mouth we hold on to, so be very prudent with your words.

16. Time is the most valuable asset.

Don’t waste your most valuable asset on frivolous things. Let every second of every day in your life count. Time is money.

17. Gratitude is a debt every man must pay but no man has the right to demand.

Do good and don’t expect anything in return, not even a thank you. It doesn’t matter if the person is grateful or not, what matters is your genuine act of good deed.

18. The first step in relating with anyone is to acknowledge that they are not you, the rest is easy.

Often times, conflict ensues when we can’t see that the other person is different and doesn’t need to be like you but rather, only needs to be understood.

19. Seeking genuine spirituality doesn’t guarantee a life free of worries but it certainly helps.

Living in a spiritual consciousness brings about certain tranquility and balance in your inner self, something you can’t just find in worldly possessions.

20. There is no free lunch.

Nothing is free in life, there is always a catch.

21. Mud sticks

No matter how much you redefine yourself, some people will keep on seeing the failed version of you that you have cast away.

Don’t bother yourself with those kind of situations, people will only see what they want to see. As long as you know who you have become, what others think doesn’t matter.

22. No matter what happens, never succumb to blackmail.

Nothing good ever comes out of this, nothing. It is just a trap that gives birth to more desperation. Always take your chances.

23. At the end of the day, you only have yourself.

Every person you love and cherish will eventually leave or go to the great beyond and you will only have yourself. Make sure you invest and love yourself unconditionally.

Have a great week ahead!

Good people do win but it’s not always the case. The truth is just that life isn’t fair, bad things sometimes happen to really good people and good things sometimes happen to really bad people.
