Nigeria clocked the big 59 today. Even though 59 may be regarded as big in terms of human age, it is in fact quite young country wise.
Nigeria is just but a teenager who was born and trained amidst questionable circumstances and decided to venture out on her own regardless. She has made lots of wrong choices in the past. She has been deceived, been stolen from, lied to, raped and bruised.
Her name is everywhere for all the negative things we can think of. Those who know her are not proud to be associated with her.
But today, I don’t want to dwell on all her bad experiences or all the things she should and shouldn’t have done. Her mistakes are not what defines her but her resolve to forge ahead.
Amidst her inner chaos, her head is still above water and that for me is a strength. Irrespective of her reputation, she is still more than willing to rebuild herself and that for me is resilience.
Nigeria has more than enough years ahead of her than she has lived and that for me is hope.
Happy birthday to my country, Nigeria. I wish her peace, a renewed unquenchable strength, and divine guidance.
