🔆Making Your Long Distance Relationship Work🔆

I know…I know..I know that long distance relationships are hard. I have never wanted to be in one, but it was inevitable for us.

So I am currently in a long distance relationship right now, we didn’t start off like that, by the way. We have always been in the same city until the call for service came and we had to geographically separate.

In Nigeria, leaving your partner for NYSC comes with a lot of uncertainties. You have probably heard a thousand heart breaking stories about how relationships have ended and all that.

It’s been 9 months so far, and I can’t wait for the mandatory one year service to be over.

So I have put together a few tips that I think will make your LDR work. *If you ever find yourself in one*

1. Communicate Excessively

Don’t mince words or summarise events when you talk over the phone. Try to make time to always talk and chat each other up, especially in the mornings and before you hit the pillows.

2. Send Pictures & Videos

Send lots of media. Morning selfies, room decor, office space, the road you take to work, your barber shop…send pictures and videos of everything about your routine. This is important because it helps your partner connect to you on the other side. Don’t forget to send naughty pictures too *clears throat*

3. Do Video Calls Often

Yup! Nothing beats seeing the LOYL in real-time.

4. Be Positive

Think of it as a phase, see your time apart as a good opportunity to learn and strengthen friendship on your love journey.

5. Don’t leave room for doubt

Being in an LDR is based on a lot of trust. Don’t be shady, when you tell your partner goodnight on WhatsApp and your snap chat shows you in the club one hour later. Be honest with each other always.

6. Visit at every given opportunity

Once the opportunity arises, make sure you visit. Don’t hesitate!

7. Build your personal life

Make good friends, work hard at your job, create a routine etc. You will be surprised at the way time flies when you are busy with stuff.

I have learnt a few things in this phase of my relationship. In the end, the best and most beautiful things cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.

And for anything worth having, one must pay the price, and the price is always work, patience, love and self-sacrifice.

Are LDRs hard? Yes

Are they worth it? Hell yeah!
